Private Residence, Attica, NY
- EVP
- Visual sighting of a former resident
- unexplained noises and odors
This old home in Attica, NY had been a summer cottage for a time, and then converted into a family home. After the grandparents of the current residents had passed away, the two-story home was inherited by the current occupants.
Unexplained sounds: Early on after moving into the home, the residents reported hearing murmuring, as if conversations were being spoken just out of their hearing. The voices would rise and fall, just as if a conversation were being spoken. The home is surrounded on three sides by woods and a stream, and with another home set about 200 feet or more away and separated by a thick row of bushes, and the voices would not carry from the next-door residence if they had originated there. The voices seemed to be either upstairs in the house (if they were downstairs) or downstairs if they were on the upper level. At times, the voices seemed to be just outside the windows of the kitchen, which faced a garage.
Unexplained sounds: At different times the residents heard loud noises, as if something were being slammed, dropped or kicked in the front hallway, or footfalls were heard throughout the home when there was no explanation, as no one was in the areas where the noises were heard.
Pet notice: one of the S.P.I.R.I.T members dog often 'tracked' something through the house, as if someone were passing through the room.
Unexplained odors: The residents reported that they would often come downstairs to the smell of baking, pipe tobacco or pickles, when none of those odors could be explained by normal cooking in the home. They reported that the smells were often there when the grandparents owned the home as normal to their residence, but not to their own lifestyle.
Visual sighting: At one point, the woman of the home was out in the yard, and looked up to see the grandmother out in the yard near a tree. For a millisecond, it did not register that she was seeing an apparition, because it seemed to be a normal sighting of the grandmother in the yard. As it registered to her that the grandmother, in fact, had passed away, she looked directly at the apparition, and it disappeared.
After these occurrences, members of S.P.I.R.I.T. conducted an official EVP session to see if anything could be captured. Both digital recordings and a 'white noise' session were introduced. Although nothing was captured using white noise, during the digital recording session, after a member said "We would like to hear from you" a long moan is heard, as if something were trying to respond, or seemingly frustrated at not being able to respond properly.
Shortly after this
session, at another date, the members of S.P.I.R.I.T. were in the home. Late at
night, one female member distinctly heard a loud, long whistle just outside of
the upstairs window of the spare bedroom. The male member did not hear the
whistle. The female member described it as being similar to the sound of what a
dog whistle might sound like if people could hear it.
On another date, the other female member of S.P.I.R.I.T. heard the same whistle,
again at night, but the male investigator with her at the time (not the
same one present during the first whistle) could not hear it.
Shortly after this, papers were discovered in the home of a will
from someone who had originally owned the home. After research by S.P.I.R.I.T.,
a descendent of this original resident was located in nearby Buffalo, NY and the
papers were transferred over as a matter of historical value.
No whistles have been heard at the home since then, although there are continuing odors and sounds that the residents are used to, and merely note to themselves.
